Robin on the Ridgepole

As I sit here drinking my smoothie that tastes like all things summer, I keep reflecting back to the busy mornings of the school year.  Any teacher knows how hectic the last few months of school can be with testing, competitions, and the eager anticipation of the coming summer.  One morning in April, I was quickly making my way to my car running behind like most mornings. . . especially at the end of the school year.  As I was stepping into my car, I looked up and saw, on our back shop roof, a little robin.  To me, this robin looked like pure joy, singing his little heart out in morning with the clear blue sky of spring as his backdrop.  I paused there for a moment, but then had to go along my day.  But that moment, capture in my mind like a Polaroid, kept coming back to me.  This poem is the contemplation that came out of the simple yet profound moment.  What busy parts of your life are keeping you from simple worship in the path you're walking along? And what lesson is the robin teaching you as you pause to soak in the beauty of the day?

Robin on the ridgepole

What makes your heart sing?

with head held high

in carefree song

with your face towards to clouds

after a night cool and long.

Robin on the ridgepole

Show me how to sing-

With head facing the sky

Bidding the Creator come nigh.

Come listen to the song

our hearts lift up to You.

Come listen and hear our song from the morning new.

Robin on the ridgepole

We were made to praise.

Praise Him for the night

Praise Him for the morning

Praise Him for the breeze

Praise Him for the calm

Praise Him for the sunshine

Praise Him for the rain

Praise Him for the winter

Praise Him when it is spring again.

  2. Emily, that is a beautiful poem. Thank you for reminding us to praise our creator for each and every small and large part of our lives. Thank you Lord for life itself and the reminder the robin on the ridgepole brings us!
